FORT COLLINS, Colo. — The swimming & diving team has a tradition of excelling in the pool and has continued its excellence into the classroom. Colorado State University honored 11 swimming & diving athletes at the annual Scholar-Athlete Brunch during Homecoming & Family Weekend, Oct. 7.
Carissa Burke, Tara DeMuth, Tasia DeMuth, Breann Fuller, Kelly Mathews, Shelley Perkins, Katie Polich, Ailey Ruger, Tess Simpson, Lydia Templin and Maxelise Thorn represented the team at the brunch with over 120 other CSU-Student athletes. To receive the honor, student-athletes had to have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
“I think it’s really important that they’re involved in stuff like this,” assistant coach Kelley McCallum said. “It shows that we’re developing them as athletes but also as students, and that goes on a lot further than just their athletic ability beyond the pool. It shows that they’re making an active effort to really forge forward with their academics into their life later on. I think it’s a great thing.”
More than 250 student-athletes, friends and family heard from the Director of Athletics Jack Graham, as well as others, at the brunch.
The swimming & diving team has already been honored by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America with the CSCAA Scholar All-American Team award for the 2012 spring semester. Their 3.13 GPA greatly exceeded the required 3.0 GPA for the award. This was the sixth time since 2009 the Rams received the award.
