FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Ellie Keyser's second consecutive victory in the women's 5K wasn't enough to lift the host Rams over a talented Western State squad Saturday, as both the men's and women's teams placed second.
Keyser finished the race with a time of 17 minutes, 59 seconds. Teammates Kendra Gerk (18:25.2) and Kaitlin Hanenburg (18.28.6) followed right behind finishing fourth and sixth respectively. The Rams placed second falling by only one point to visiting Western State. Northern Colorado finished third overall followed by Cloud Community College (Concordia, Kan.).
The story stayed the same in the men's four-mile race. The Rams placed four runners in the top 10 only to fall to Western State by nine points. Jake Keyser (20:54.2) led the way for CSU finishing seven seconds behind Western State's Tyler Pennel who took first. Spenser Lynass ran a strong race finishing with a time of 20 minutes, 55 seconds, good for sixth place.
Similar to the women's race Northern Colorado and Cloud finished third and fourth.
Ellie Keyser continues to impress, winning her second race in as many weeks after breaking her own course record at the Wyoming Invitational Sept. 3. Even Head Coach Bryan Berryhill is surprised at how well Keyser is running.
"Ellie had another great race today. It's amazing to see her perform like that with the large training load we are giving her." Berryhill said.
The team will return to practice this week gearing up for the Roy Griak Invitational held in Minneapolis, Minn., on Sept. 25. Berryhill certainly sees the Rams heading in the right direction as they move into the heart of their season.
"We set our training up so that we are at our best starting with the Griak meet," Berryhill said. "We are going to continue to train like we are leading up to that race."
The day started off with a community race following the same course at the collegiate races. Former CSU All-American Kristen Hemphill took first on the women's side and CSU alum Jeremy Freed won the men's race.
