Colorado State Fit to Be Tied

10/10/2024 7:03:00 PM | Women's Soccer

Broncos draw even with Rams in match, standings

The adjectives varied. Kudos to the team, too, because they were all suitable for print.

That can be tough to do, as tough as giving up a game-tying goal with 2 seconds on the clock in a game you controlled.

Colorado State's women's soccer team had done up the point Jayla Land's shot found the upper left corner of the net, just out of the reach of Libby Brooker's outstretched hand Thursday afternoon at CSU Soccer Field.

"It's heartbreaking. You get a last-second goal scored on you in any moment, and you felt like you played really well to earn the win," CSU coach Keeley Hagen said. "Give credit to them to be organized enough to get a last-second shot. We could have done a couple of different things there at the end to close it out better, and our players held themselves accountable for that.

"At the end of the day, it's a game of inches. It's a game of seconds, and that's what happened."

Holding on to a 1-0 lead, Colorado State cleared a ball out of the box, but it found the foot of Jillian Anderson off to the side. From there, she fed Land in the middle outside of the box, where she curved a tough shot into the corner to knot the match at 1.

The result, paired with No. 11 Utah State's 2-0 loss to Wyoming earlier in the day, left the Rams and Broncos as the only unbeaten teams in the conference. The Rams sit at 8-3-2 overall, 4-0-1 in Mountain West play, Boise State at 10-2-2, 4-0-1.

The Rams were 2 seconds away from being the lone team to make that claim.

"Frustrated. Keeley always says we don't deserve anything, but we think we earned that one," CSU defender Kate Dunne said. "To just give up something like that at the end is obviously frustrating. We were proud of a lot of the things we did."

Namely keeping Boise State's offense from finding a rhythm throughout the afternoon. A team that averages 18.7 shots per game, the Broncos had only two at the break, finishing with 11, six of which were on the frame.

Carly Cross, who leads the Mountain West in shots per game at 4.15 took but one, coming nowhere near adding to her league-leading goal total of seven. Avery McBride, the owner of six goals, took no shots in a match which was feisty to saw the least, with 25 combined fouls, 18 on the guests.

"That's why my adjective is frustrating. It's a cruel sport," Dunne said. "Especially that game, to lose it in the last two seconds. We wanted that one, too, after last year, for revenge. But … I don't know. It's cruel."

The Rams led 1-0 at halftime when Kaja Dionne scored in the 31st minute, cashing in a play which became a breakaway off a lasered feed from Liv Stutzman. Dionne had some space away from defenders she split, pushing forward into the box until she feathered a shot into the lower corner to the right of the goalie.

It was the second tally of the year for the freshman, the second assist for Stutzman. It was a play a forward hopes will eventually develop.

"You never know when they're going to come. I definitely realized when they were shifting on to one side that was the opportunity because the whole other side was open," Dionne said. "That was the opportunity, and that goes for my side or whoever was on the other side.

"It was hard to calm my nerves, but I tried to keep it composed. I just saw the opportunity and took it."

The Rams can spend the next 24 hours playing what-if all they want. A few inches one way, and Mia Massey's blast in the ninth minute finds the net, not the post. It could have been a 2-0 lead in the 81st minute if Genevive Crenshaw hadn't come up clutch when Mia Casey blasted one on the doorstep.

These are the moments all teams work to avoid, but they happen. They used to happen a few years ago with regularity for Colorado State, but this is a different team. And what Hagen cautioned them not to let happen she actually has no fear will transpire.

"We talked about not letting this break us and keep pushing forward," she said. "I thought we did some really good things on both sides of the ball."

And they can play what-if about what they could have done differently at the end. The goal was to clear the ball, which the Rams tried to do. It's easy after the fact to say it wasn't far enough or to aim for out-of-bounds, but the reality was none of them expected what happened would actually transpire.

"Shocking. I think my jaw was on the floor for 10 seconds," Dionne said. "Credit to them for their hard work, but honestly, that's always on us. It was a hard fight at the end, and I think everyone tried their best to get it out. That was a great shot, too."

One the Rams felt deep in their core.
