Devos’ 25 points are the most by any CSU freshman in her first collegiate game during Ryun Williams’ tenure
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Despite a 25-point effort by Lore Devos in her first collegiate game, the Colorado State women's basketball team fell to the Idaho Vandals, 83-69, on Friday at Moby Arena.
The guard from Kortrijk, Belgium tallied her 25 points on 10-of-16 shooting and a 5-for-5 night from the free throw line. Senior guard Hannah Tvrdy joined her in double-digit scoring with a 5-for-9, 12-point performance. Devos' 25 points are the most by any CSU freshman in her debut over head coach Ryun Williams' now-six-year tenure.
With an 18-for-36 showing from beyond the three-point arc, Idaho (1-0) had four players in double-figures scoring. Chief among the three-point shooters for the Vandals on Friday was Taylor Pierce, who made seven of her 13 three-point attempts and finished the night with 24 points. Mikayla Ferenz went 4-for-9 from three-point range and tallied 22 points.
Colorado State (0-1) led for the first 5:54 of the game, but scored all eight of their points in the first quarter over the first 3:45. The Rams' scoring drought over the remainder of the quarter, combined with 4-for-7 three-point shooting by Idaho in that opening period, resulted in a 16-0 Vandal run and a 21-8 IU advantage heading to the second quarter.
That Idaho run continued through the first minute of the second quarter, as the Vandals built a lead as large as 18 points at 26-8. However, the Rams regained their offensive touch and went on a 9-0 run to cut the deficit to 26-17. The Rams got hot from long range in that period, using 5-of-9 three-point shooting to outscore Idaho 18-6 over the final 9:06 and cut the deficit to 32-26 at halftime.
Despite that second-quarter surge, CSU was never able to claw within less than six points of Idaho in the second half. The Vandals made 11 of their 18 threes in the second half to take control of the game, outscoring the Rams 51-43 down the stretch.
IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Ryun Williams
"First of all, that's pretty impressive what Idaho did as far as their shot-making ability. We knew coming in that they've got three kids that can really stretch you and any breakdown that you have as far as too much separation, or if you help off a shooter when you shouldn't...all of those mistakes really got exposed tonight."
On the team's performance:
"We always have to be a more balanced team. We are still figuring this group out and that's what this young season is going to be all about - who really wants to compete, how important is it to you. We'll figure that out. The inexperience will become experience throughout these games and we'll find some units that can score the ball and guard consistently."
Senior guard Hannah Tvrdy
On Idaho's offensive performance:
"They had a great night shooting, but that doesn't excuse our defense. I know I'm not happy with the way I defended and the team as a whole has a lot to work on."
On the offense Lore Devos provided:
"It was cool seeing Lore come in in her first game, and just being confident, stepping up and hitting those shots. That's what we needed at the time."
Freshman guard Lore Devos
On expectations coming into her first college game:
"I just knew this was going to be a challenge against this team. We had to play hard and stay focused all the time and, even me, I lost focus sometimes, especially at the end. We can still do better. I can still do better. We can all do better."
On her scoring mentality on Friday:
"I just started well then i realized I had to do something to get the team going and I just took the chances I got."
NOTES
- Prior to Lore Devos' 25 points on Friday, the only other CSU freshman to score 20 points in her collegiate debut was two-time Mountain West Player of the Year Ellen Nystrom. That performance came in a win over UCCS on Nov. 8, 2013.
- Veronika Mirkovic's nine rebounds on Friday marked a new career high. Her previous collegiate best was five against Omaha (Nov. 11, 2016) and Adams State (Nov. 23, 2016).
- Each of Devos, Annie Brady, Grace Colaivalu, Nathalie Linden and Lena Svanholm played in their first official collegiate game with CSU on Friday.
