Ram linebacker and nation’s leading tackler recognized at national level

FORT COLLINS – Colorado State football's Owen Long was named to the Associated Press' midseason All-America second team, the national organization announced earlier this week. The list is determined by a panel of national media members who vote each week in the AP Top 25 college football poll.

Long has put together a resume more than worthy of the national recognition as the second-year linebacker is the country's leading tackler so far this season – and by a wide margin. Long's average of 14.2 total tackles per game is 2.5 better than the next closest player in FBS, and his 85 total tackles have him in front by 15.

The Ram linebacker has continued to step up his game as the season has rolled along, matching or increasing his career-best in total tackles each of the last four games. In last week's win over Fresno State, Long recorded 16 total tackles, notched his first-career sack and logged a collegiate-best 2.0 tackles for loss to lead a dominant defensive effort.

Despite being just a 19-year old true sophomore, Long has stepped into a large leadership role within the program. Ahead of the season, the Whittier, Calif., native was elected one of six team captains by his teammates, making him the youngest captain ever under a Jay Norvell led team. Long has had to step up even more as four of the six original captains – including the other three on the defensive side of the ball – have missed significant time over the course of the season.

Long and the Rams are set to take on Hawai'i tonight in Canvas Stadium at 5 p.m. MT in front of a sold-out crowd for homecoming. Fans can stream the game in the Mountain West App.
