Rams Earn First Mountain West Win With Border War Victory Over Wyoming Saturday

1/4/2020 3:38:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Freshmen Roddy, Stevens lead the way in the scoring column for CSU

FORT COLLINS, Colo.  – Colorado State used a solid defensive performance and a significant interior presence in earning its first Mountain West victory of 2019-20, defeating Wyoming 72-61 in the first Border War meeting of 2019-20 on Saturday. With the victory, the Rams improved to 10-7 on the year and 1-3 in Mountain West action, while the Cowboys dropped to 5-11 and 0-4 in the league.

The two teams exchanged early leads as the game was tied at nine just under six minutes into the game, as CSU was without redshirt-senior Nico Carvacho for most of the first half due to foul trouble. The Rams pushed through that with a 7-0 run over a two-minute span that put the hosts up for good at 16-9. The margin shrunk to two at 18-16 with 5:46 to go in the first half, but CSU, sparked by freshman David Roddy's 11 first-half points, closed out the first 20 minutes with a 14-3 run to take a 32-19 advantage at halftime.

After a quick bucket by Wyoming to start the second half, CSU scored the next nine points to open up a 20-point lead. The margin grew to as much as 23 and was 17 in the final minute before a pair of late Cowboy threes closed the final gap.

CSU finished the game shooting 51.0 percent (26-of-51) from the floor despite going just 5-of-23 behind the three-point arc. Wyoming was limited to just 38.2 percent from the field (21-of-55) and 38.5 percent (10-of-26) on threes. The Rams dominated the glass 42-26 and held an 18-10 advantage in points off turnovers and 14-3 in second chance points.

Roddy led the Rams with career highs of 19 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, while fellow freshman Isaiah Stevens added 17 points and six assists. Sophomore Kendle Moore tallied 11 points, while Carvacho finished with nine points and 12 rebounds, with all the scoring and eight boards coming in the final 20 minutes. The Cowboys were led by Hunter Maldonado with 25 points on 8-of-19 shooting.
