Rams' blocking not enough against No. 20 Michigan

9/8/2018 7:35:00 PM | Volleyball

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Colorado State volleyball team battled No. 20 Michigan, but fell 3-0 in the final match of the Michigan Challenge.

Colorado State scored four-consecutive points early in the match to take the lead and increased it to 13-10 before Michigan started a run. The Wolverines strung together seven points through the heart of the frame to take a 17-13 lead. Michigan took the set, despite the Rams coming within two at 23-21.

The Rams took an early lead in the second set after putting together a 6-1 run to lead, 8-3, and force Michigan to use a timeout. After the break, Michigan responded with five-consecutive points to tie the match 8-8. Michigan took a small lead at 13-12 and both teams traded points down the stretch as UM held its largest lead at 23-20 before closing the set at 25-23.

In the final frame, Michigan took an early lead and built a cushion at 9-4 before not letting the Rams get within four the rest of the way.

QUOTES
Head Coach Tom Hilbert on the match…
"I thought we played really well for about 75 percent of the match. We got the ball to the right people and we out hit Michigan in the first set, but we got service aced. They had one good player that aced us seven times and if we avoided that, we would have been in pretty good shape. I thought some good things came from the match from an offensive stand point. We did not defend great against Michigan, we blocked some of the stuff, but we couldn't stop No. 1."

Hilbert on the offense…
"Kirstie Hillyer and Paulina Hougaard-Jensen are great players and can kill balls against anybody especially when they are playing like they did tonight. We didn't get a high kill percentage from Breana Runnels, but I don't feel like she played poorly; we're playing against a pretty good team. Michigan could defend pretty well and that is why we didn't get a lot of kills from our outsides."

STAT OF THE DAY
Kirstie Hillyer led the offense with 11 kills, while hitting .500. She also added six blocks which was tied for team-high with Olivia Nicholson.

NOTES
- Olivia Nicholson helped control the net, putting up six blocks.
- Paulina Hougaard-Jensen recorded eight kills, while hitting .400 and adding five blocks, including one solo.
- Breana Runnels floored nine kills and tallied the only two service aces for the Rams.
- Katie Oleksak dished out 32 assists.
- Michigan racked up seven aces on CSU, while Colorado State held control of the net with an 11-6 blocks advantage.
