Rams trample Seminoles comeback attempt in five-set marathon Saturday night

9/2/2018 12:00:00 AM | Volleyball

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State volleyball team took a two-set lead before Florida State turned the match into a five-set thriller that ended with the Rams earning the marathon win.

The opening frame was an offensive battle as there were 14 tie scores and five lead changes. The Rams led at 11-7 before the Seminoles went on a five-point tear to lead 12-11 and force Colorado State to take a timeout. Following the quick break, both teams continued to trade points down the stretch as the set was knotted at 21-21. The Rams' offense suddenly found its groove as they finished the set on a four-point run.

It was all Colorado State in the second, hitting a blistering .448 hitting percentage and holding FSU to a .032 mark. Kirstie Hillyer also paced the offense again with another five kills in the frame. The Rams took an early 3-0 lead and never looked back as they increased their cushion to 12-4 before taking a 2-0 match lead with a 25-11 set win.

Following intermission, Florida State's offense began to click, hitting a match-high .469 in the fourth set. The Seminoles led 4-1 and held the lead through the set despite Colorado State coming within two points late.

The Seminoles tied the match in the fourth frame, again taking an early lead and holding the Rams offense at bay. FSU's offense hit at an efficient rate with a .467 percentage and holding CSU to a .241 mark.

The final set was a marathon as there was an outstanding 13 tie scores and a match-high six lead changes. Colorado State led at 8-7 before Florida State strung together four-consecutive points to force the Rams to use both their timeouts. CSU tied the match at 13-13 before both teams traded points down the stretch. Florida State held match point at 17-16 before the Rams recorded back-to-back points to snag match points themselves. FSU evened the score with a kill before CSU finished the race with a kill from Sasha Colombo and an ace from Maddi Foutz. Colorado State had match point four different times in the final set.

QUOTES
Head Coach Tom Hilbert on the match…
"That was a heck of a volleyball match. For our team to come through, I thought that was pretty gutsy considering we had already played four sets earlier today in a very physical match with Cincinnati. To bounce back and get this win is big was huge. I think Florida State is a good team and I think it was a big character check for us. That fifth set was extremely competitive and it took some real big-time plays from many players on our team to get that win."

Kirstie Hillyer on teammate Maddi Foutz filling in at libero…
"Having played with her in high school and then here at Colorado State, Maddi can be such a clutch player and I think she definitely showed a lot of that tonight. She showed her potential and she is an amazing athlete; that was evident tonight."

STAT OF THE DAY
Colorado State had two players with 20-plus kills (Kirstie Hillyer, 21 and Breana Runnels, 20) for the first time since former Rams Sanja Cizmic (27) and Jasmine Hanna (20) did against Wyoming on Nov. 22, 2016.
