Rams sweep past Broncos on Thursday night

10/11/2018 9:44:00 PM | Volleyball

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State volleyball team picked up its eighth sweep of the season and third in the Mountain West, with a victory over Boise State on Thursday night.

The Rams began the match on a 6-1 run to take an early lead and force Boise State to burn its first timeout. CSU's offense continued to dominate, as it cruised to a 25-14 first-set win. Colorado State led from the first serve to the end, while hitting .323and the Rams' defense was locked in, not allowing the Broncos to score more than two-consecutive points in the frame.

The Broncos took a 9-7 lead in the second frame as they strung together four points early and later extended their lead to 14-10. The Rams fought their way back to tie the set before taking a 19-18 lead late. CSU went on to complete the comeback and take a two-set match lead as Kirstie Hillyer and Katie Oleksak put up a block for the final set point.

The final set was much like the previous as Boise State used four- and three-point runs to hold an 11-9 advantage. The Rams again chiseled away at the Broncos lead, using a three-point run to tie the match at 13-13. CSU then manufactured a five-point lead as it went on an 8-3 run to lead 21-16 late and force the Broncos to use a timeout before earning the sweep.

QUOTES
Head Coach Tom Hilbert's opening statement…
"I thought that we played really well and it was interesting because our service pressure was really good and we got Boise State disrupted right off the bat. The Broncos played well and they are really good at changing the tempos in the middle of the match. What I really liked from my team tonight was the third set. We kept the set close and then we created a nice scoring gap and stuck it out through the rest of the match. That was tough competitiveness by my team and we end up winning the match.

Hilbert on gaining momentum back when Boise started to creep up…
"What we have to do in those situations is just respect our opponent and don't think that because they're scoring points something's wrong. Boise State is a good team, and we just have to be who we are and fight back."

Hilbert On the improvement in the team's service game…
"I don't know that we do anything different. We're at home, and that's one thing that's helped us; it's just different when you're on the road. They think a little too much sometimes on the road and when we're at home we are more comfortable. The whole key now is for these guys to get that feeling and understand what it feels like to be comfortable as an aggressive server. Then we can go do it on the road.

Maddi Foutz & Paulina Hougaard-Jensen on what the team's doing to maintain energy through the rest of their MW opponents…
Foutz: "Setting new standards for practice, and really trying to push ourselves and hold ourselves and each other accountable."

Hougaard-Jensen: "We're working really hard on being positive in practice and not just thinking about practice as something we have to get over with, but actually being happy and playing for each other."

Katie Oleksak paced the offense with 40 assists, which tied her previous record for the most in a sweep this season, (Portland State, Sept. 15).
