Rams hit four free throws in final 12 seconds for the win
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State men's basketball team hung on to a 83-79 exhibition victory versus Northern Colorado on Sunday evening. The Rams going into the final minute of play led by two points, but stalwart defense and hitting key free-throws allowed the Rams to put the game away. All proceeds from the game will benefit a relief fund for Puerto Rico, home of former Ram and current Dallas Mavericks guard Gian Clavell.
After Northern Colorado's Andre Spight hit a three to cut the CSU lead to just four at the three-minute mark, the teams traded a pair of scoreless possessions. The visiting Bears shrunk it to two with 47 seconds remaining, but CSU made a much-needed stop with 12 seconds on Che Bob's strip of the ball and the Rams connected on all four free throws in that final span to seal the win.
The Rams trailed by seven points at the 11:17 mark of the first half but turned the tide in the contest, and took the lead in the contest five minutes later. Colorado State never trailed for the rest of the game.
The Rams offensively had three players finish in double figures led by senior forward Che Bob who tallied 25 points on 9-of-15 field goals and six shots from the charity stripe while adding nine rebounds in his 35 minutes of play. J.D. Paige chipped in 18, knocking down two threes and going a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line. The team outrebounded the Bears 39-38 during the night and Rams' center Nico Carvacho stayed on the boards all night for CSU pulling down 16. Spight led UNC with 25 points
THEIR WORDS
Colorado State head coach Larry Eustachy
(on tonight's game)
"That was a great game for us. That team is really, really good and I think they'll win the Big Sky (Conference). What I liked is that we matched their determination. I was hoping it'd go to overtime to be honest, just so we could play five more minutes. It was just a great game for a really great cause."
(on Che Bob's performance)
"[Che Bob] is very determined. He's a completely different player and a different person. He's starting to trust and settle in. He's bought into how he needs to play. I'm really happy for him."
Colorado State forward Che Bob
(Thoughts on being the leading scorer during the night and that role for the team)
"Gian (Clavell) was a big part of our offense last year and I think I can be that person for our team this year. Coach (Eustachy) knows my ability and has given me the freedom to attack. I have been able to score in bunches my whole basketball career so it is comfortable for me to put up numbers (20 points per game) like that.
STAT OF THE GAME…
