FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Colorado State opened its 2016-17 women's golf season on Monday with Day 1 of the Colonel Wollenberg Ptarmigan Ram Classic, CSU's annual home tournament at the Ptarmigan Country Club. CSU is one of 16 teams represented in the tournament.

Overall, Monday was a disappointing opening day for the Rams, who are in 13th place with a 38-over 614 through two rounds. CSU, however, did make strides in the afternoon, improving 12 strokes from Round 1 to Round 2 and jumping two places in the standings.

The day was highlighted by freshman Ellen Secor, who was making her collegiate debut as an individual. Secor ranks fourth out of 87 golfers through two rounds, firing a 4-under 68 in Round 2 and a 1-over 73 in her first 18 holes. She has a tournament-most 10 birdies and is one of seven golfers to card a round under 70. Secor is one of 15 CSU golfers ever to record a 68 or better in a single round.

CSU's top scorer is Jessica Sloot, also a true freshman making her collegiate debut on Monday. She shot a 7-over 151 and is tied for 34th place. Sloot improved five strokes in the afternoon, carding a 1-over 73. Just behind her is junior Sarah Archuleta (8-over 152; T-37th) and Brianna Becker (9-over 153; T-42nd). CSU shot even during the front nine of Round 2 - moving as high as ninth place at one point - before posting a 13-over on the back nine.

San Jose State holds a strong lead over the rest of the field with a 4-uner 572, followed by Nevada (12-over 588), Gonzaga (13-over 589), UC Irvine (14-over 590), Oregon State (16-over 592), San Francisco (20-over 596), Indiana and Northern Colorado (24-over 600), Portland State (26-over 602), Wyoming (27-over 603), Nebraska (36-over 612), Boise State (37-over 613), CSU (38-over 614), Long Beach State (43-over 619) and Hawai'i (46-over 622).

Golfers will tee off for the final round Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. MT. Live scoring can be tracked through BirdieFire.
