Storrs, Conn. - Freshmen guards and former high school teammates Kelly Jo Mullaney and Emily Neal each reached double-digits in scoring for the Rams, as the Colorado State University women's basketball team (5-6) fell to the No. 6-ranked University of Connecticut (8-0), 93-58, on Thursday night at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, Conn. Mullaney posted 19 points and Neal notched 10.
Three-point shooting kept the Rams afloat throughout the contest. Mullaney and Neal combined for the Rams' first 15 points of the game, all from 3-point range, as Colorado State was held without a 2-point field goal in the first half. Mullaney was a perfect 4-for-4 from long distance in the first half, and Neal hit 2-for-3 from beyond the arc while senior Molly Nohr scored the team's only other basket of the first half.
In the second half, the Rams offense opened up a bit, and junior guard Sara Hunter added eight points, and Kelly Finley added to her four first-half free throws to finish with nine points in the contest.
Overall, the Huskies connected on 58.8 percent from the field, compared with 35 percent for the Rams. UConn also gained an advantage from the foul line, shooting 15 more free throws (21-32) than the Rams (12-17). The Rams were also outrebounded, for only the second time all season, by a 43-23 margin.
Next up, the Rams will head to Las Cruces, N.M. for a matchup with the New Mexico State Aggies. Game time is set for 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 29.
