LOS ANGELES, Calif.—Colorado State freshman Ariel Arcidiacono has been named this week’s KAP7 Co-WWPA Player of the Week, along with Loyola Marymount’s Alexandra Honny.
In the four-team Brown Invite, the Colorado State Rams took third place over the weekend, picking up their first two wins of the season, including an historic victory over No. 20 Brown. The 10-9 victory over the Bears was just CSU’s second-ever win over a ranked opponent, and was the team’s first true road victory in nearly two years (April 16, 2011).
The Rams opened the tournament with a disappointing loss to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, letting a 6-3 lead evaporate into a 10-8 overtime defeat. The Rams rebounded with the victory over Brown, and after dropping another disappointing contest—the Rams led Wagner 4-1 at one point and 5-4 entering the fourth quarter before falling 9-5—CSU got a rematch against CMS, this time defeating the Athenas, 16-9.
In the win, which secured third place for the Rams, Arcidiacono scored six times, in addition to three assists, a steal and a drawn ejection. The six goals tied the most by a CSU player in school history. It was just the second time a freshman has reached the mark.
Arcidiacono scored twice in the upset over Brown, plus adding three assists and a steal. One of those goals came in the final 3 minutes of action to give CSU a 9-8 advantage, setting up the Rams’ victory.
In four games on the weekend, the freshman from San Diego, Calif., had 10 goals, 10 assists, eight steals and five ejections drawn.
The Rams will return to the pool on Saturday, Feb. 23, for an exhibition game against the top players from the University of Colorado and University of Denver club teams. The game will take place at the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center in Thornton, Colo., with the action beginning at 12 p.m. MT.
