Michigan Kick-Off Tournament Central

The Colorado State women’s water polo team knew that the competition would be challenging this weekend, and despite falling in both contests to open the Michigan Kick-Off and 2013 season, the Rams hung close in both games Saturday.

Facing No. 14 Indiana, the Rams (0-2) limited the Hoosiers (1-1) to one goal in the first frame, leading early, 2-1. However, six second-period scores for Indiana put the Hoosiers on top, and the Rams would be forced to play catch up for the remainder of the contest before falling, 10-7.

Ariel Arcidiacono, playing in her first collegiate games on Saturday, scored twice against the Hoosiers, as did junior Stephanie Weed. Also scoring for the Rams was junior Jamie Stone and seniors Shelby Schaefer and Caroline Young.

“At the end of the first period we were ahead 2-1 and after the second period, we were trailing 7-4,” said associate head coach Mike Moody. “We had a terrible second period, and again our depth from the bench is not good.”

In the season opener, facing No. 11 Michigan (1-1), CSU lost, 15-9. Sophomore Kelcy Barott led all players with four goals. She also set a CSU single-game record with eight ejections drawn.

“Kelcy had a phenomenal game,” Moody said. “She played well on both ends of the pool.”

The Rams trailed by just one, 4-3, after the first quarter, and 11-8 after three, but the Wolverines outscored the Rams 4-1 in the final period to seal the win.

“We played well for the first three periods, but got into foul trouble late and again, they had a deeper bench,” Moody said.

Also scoring for CSU was Schaefer (2) Young (2) and Arcidiacono. Junior Michelle Slagle earned 12 saves in the cage, totaling 24 on the day.

The Rams will play twice more in the Michigan Kick-Off, facing No. 3 UCLA (9:20 a.m. MT) and No. 9 San Jose State (12:25 p.m.) on Sunday.

“There were some good things that came from the losses today,” Moody said, “but we need to be better in some areas in order to pick up a couple wins.”
