COLUMBUS, Ohio – Colorado State freshman setter Katie Oleksak has been named an Honorable Mention All-American by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. The AVCA announced the All-America recipients today.
Oleksak, the Mountain West Freshman of the Year, is the first CSU true freshman to be named an Honorable Mention All-American. Megan Plourde, a redshirt freshman when she earned the honor in 2009, is the only other freshman to receive the same recognition.
The Phoenix native was named AVCA All-Pacific North Region last week alongside fellow freshman teammate, Kirstie Hillyer.
Oleksak ranks 16th nationally in assists and first among all freshmen. She is also the only player in the NCAA to average 11-plus assists, 2-plus digs and at least 0.90 blocks per set. Her 0.94 blocks per set rank second among all setters in the country.
She set a pair of CSU assists records under the current 25-point rally scoring format, tallying the most single-match assists in both a four-set and five-set match. Her 71 assists vs. Wyoming on Nov. 22 was the third-most by any setter in the NCAA this season. The 11.26 assists per set that she posted over the season was the third-most during the modern scoring era.
The star setter was one of 13 freshmen to receive All-America honors, and one of eight to be named Honorable Mention. Only two freshman setters were recognized – Oleksak and MacKenzi Welsh of Michigan.
The award is one of many that Oleksak has earned in her rookie season. She was named all-conference by the Mountain West, and earned MW Offensive Player of the Week honors on Sept. 26.
Oleksak, who was also a Third Team Under Armour All-American her senior year of high school at Sunnyslope HS in Phoenix, was one of six freshmen to play for CSU this year. Four of those freshmen also started at least 15 matches. The rookies played a large role in CSU (21-9, 15-3 MW) reaching its 22nd consecutive NCAA Tournament and taking second in the Mountain West conference.
