In a totally dominant fashion, the eighth-ranked Colorado State volleyball team swept the No. 19 Utah Utes in the Mountain West Conference Championship, 30-18, 30-16, 30-18. With the win, the Rams win their second consecutive conference championship crown and improve to 25-3 on the season, while the Utes fall to 23-5 on the year.

Colorado State becomes the first team in the Mountain West Conference to ever win the tournament as the host institution.

Senior setter Melissa Courtney was named the MVP of the tournament after recording five kills with zero errors in seven swings with 37 assists, three aces and five digs in the championship. She also led the team to a .381 hitting percentage. Junior outside hitter Tess Rogers led the Rams with 14 kills and hit .591 (14-1-22), while sophomore libero Kristen Karlik led the match with 15 digs, including several one-handed diving digs to save points. Senior middle blocker Katie Jo Shirley-Cahoon, who was named to the all-tournament team, led the team with six blocks, including two solo, and tied for the team lead with three aces. Senior middle blocker Bri Frech and junior right-side hitter Dre Downs joined the other two on the all-tournament squad. Downs had nine kills and hit .471 while recording four blocks, while Frech had five kills, five digs and two blocks, but was dominant in the semifinals against BYU.

This is one of the most complete matches weve played since Ive been a coach here, said Head Coach Tom Hilbert. Im incredibly proud of this team -- everybody had outstanding games. We had great serving and passing, great blocking and outstanding hitting.

Utah was led by junior outside hitter Danielle Leichliter with 11 kills and a .250 hitting percentage. Senior setters Tracy Neumeier and Kelsie Kartchner had 20 and 14 assists, respectively, while sophomore libero Connie Dangerfield led the Utes with 12 digs. Kartchner and junior outside hitter Shelly Summerfeldt were named to the all-tournament team.

The other two members of the all-tournament team were Nicki King and Jada Walker from UNLV. Walker was named the libero of the tournament.

Colorado State will face Idaho on Wed., evening on senior night at 5:00 p.m. The Vandals are coached by former CSU assistant coach Debbie Buchanan and the last regular season match for Rocky Mountain High School graduate Mandy Becker. The Rams will then await news of the NCAA Tournament and whether or not they get to continue playing in Moby Arena.
