The Colorado State women’s volleyball program is among the most successful and tradition-filled in the history of the sport, largely due to the staple who has been leading the program for the last 16 seasons. Head Coach Tom Hilbert—already the winningest coach in any sport in CSU history—earned his 400th career victory as head coach of the Rams on Tuesday, adding yet another milestone to his already stellar coaching career.
Hilbert by the numbers:
|400||Wins at CSU, making him the winningest coach in any sport in school history. His record is 400-103 (.795).|
|574||Career wins over 24 seasons, which ranks 19th among active coaches. Of those ahead of him, zero have been coaching for as few of years as Hilbert. All-time, he is 574-175 (.766).|

|15||NCAA tournament appearances in 15 seasons in Fort Collins, including five trips to the Sweet 16. The Rams have earned 17 straight NCAA tournament berths—with 15 coming under Hilbert’s tutelage—which is the eighth-longest active streak in the country. He also earned a tournament berth four times while at Idaho (1992-95).|

What they say:
“Tom Hilbert is the epitome of a great collegiate coach. Four-hundred wins at one university, and moving toward 600 in his career, is just outstanding. Equally impressive is what he has done for so many young women, to help them to succeed academically and to prepare them for life. Tom embodies our ‘Do it all’ standard—be a great person, academic excellence and win. Tom does it all. Colorado State has benefitted greatly from having him as a part of our team for the past 16 years.”
- Jack Graham, CSU Director of Athletics
“I am so incredibly happy for Tom. This milestone shows his hard work, dedication and commitment to this game and this university. Tom has completely changed my life. He gave me an opportunity I am unbelievably thankful for, and has done everything in his power to help make it the best it can be. I have never met a coach who cares about his players more than Tom. He pushes us on the court because he sees the greatness within us. He encourages us and does everything he can to assist us in the classroom because he knows how important the ‘student’ is in ‘student-athlete’. Most of all, though, he cares how we are doing as people. He knows that the growth we go through in our time here will shape us into the women we will become, and he makes sure that when we leave here we are prepared to take on the world. I am so honored to play for him.”
- Dana Cranston, senior outside hitter
“Tom is one of the greats in the sport of volleyball, and I have a tremendous amount of respect for him, both as a person and a coach. The longevity that he’s been doing this, and to be very good for such a long period of time, is remarkable. He has proven that he has great ability to coach, recruit, develop talents and work with different types of players. He does all that and always puts out a winning program, which is impressive. I’ve learned so much from Tom, and not just the X’s and O’s, but how to run a program the right way. I continue to aspire to be what he is, and younger coaches all across the country use him a resource. I’m very happy for Tom.”
- Jesse Mahoney, associate head coach at CSU from 2005-11; current head coach at Denver
“What a great honor for Tom. He’s made a huge impact on countless players and members of the community, so it’s a great milestone for him to reach and be able to share with the best city. I’m thankful for the impact he’s had on my life and my career, and I know he will continue to influence and shape players for years to come.”
- Angela Knopf, player for Hilbert from 1998-01; CSU’s only two-time first-team AVCA All-American
