Behind a solid performance by sophomore right side hitter Dre Downs, the 18th-ranked Colorado State volleyball team won a four-game match over Utah in Moby Arena to remain perfect in Mountain West Conference action. The Rams improve to 18-4 overall and 9-0 in league action, while the Utes fall to 13-7 overall and 7-2 in conference play.

Downs led the team with a .478 hitting percentage off a season-high 13 kills and she notched a career-high eight blocks, including four solo stops in the win. Junior middle blocker Katie Jo Shirley led the team with 16 kills, while junior outside hitter Becky Sarauer added 15 and sophomore outside hitter Tess Rogers tallied 10 kills. Junior libero Lindsey Kerr led the team with 12 digs and freshman defensive specialist Kristen Karlik tied her career high with nine digs for the second match in a row. Sarauer also led all players with three aces and junior setter Melissa Courtney had 54 assists.

“It was a very, very competitive match all the way through,” said head coach Tom Hilbert. “They (Utah) were much more prepared for us this time than at their place. Whey they’re playing solid like this they’re very tough.”

Utah was led by outside hitter Shelly Sommerfeldt with 18 kills and a .385 hitting percentage, while Kim Turner, Lyndsey Henderson and Danielle Leichliter all chipped in 11 kills each. Senior libero Jackie Morrill also led all players with 19 digs and right side hitter Amie Toone led all players with 10 blocks, including three solo. Both Kelsie Kartchner and Tracy Neumeier saw action at the setting spot with Kartchner tallying 30 assists and Neumeier 16.

“We had no answer for Sommerfeldt and their libero was outstanding,” said Hilbert. “I told our players before the match ‘Let’s make it a story’ (the match) and we certainly did that tonight. Casey Bauer was a big part of the reason in us winning game two.”

The Rams hit the road for their final conference matches away from Moby at San Diego State on Thurs., Oct. 30 and at UNLV on Sat., Nov. 1. They then return home for their final three matches of the conference season against Wyoming on Fri., Nov. 7 and Air Force and New Mexico on Nov. 14 and 15, respectively.
