Cranston’s Senior CLASS Award Bio | Online Voting | 2012 Finalists | Senior CLASS Release
OVERLAND PARK, Kan.—Colorado State senior Dana Cranston’s achievements on and off the court have landed her as one of 10 finalists for the 2012 Senior CLASS Award.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. The award honors the attributes of senior student-athletes in four areas: community, classroom, character and competition.
“This is such an honor,” Cranston said. “I owe it to all those around me—my family, friends and teammates who push me every day to be great in every part of my life. I’m surrounded by constant support and people who love me and who want to see me do well. Getting this recognition reminds me how lucky I am to be at CSU, playing for the coaches I do, and with the teammates I have. I’m so thankful for these blessings.”
The outside hitter from Fort St. John, B.C. was chosen as one of 30 candidates in September, before a media committee selected her as one of 10 finalists.
“Dana is very deserving of this award,” Head Coach Tom Hilbert said. “Not only is she a great volleyball player, but she perfectly fits each of the criteria the CLASS Award is about. She’s an excellent student, great in the community and has incredible character.
“Because of who she is—and her work ethic—she continually makes our program better in every facet. I’m very excited that she’s being recognized.”
Fans have an opportunity to make Cranston this year’s Senior CLASS Award winner through nationwide voting. Online voting runs through Nov. 26. Fan votes will be combined with media and Division I head coaches’ votes to determine the winner.
The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2012 NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Championship, which will take place December 13 and 15 in Louisville, Kentucky.
A 6-3 outside hitter from Fort St. John, B.C., Cranston will complete her degree in business administration in May. She currently holds a 3.91 GPA, the highest on the team, and is a three-time Mountain West Scholar-Athlete. On the court, she was named the 2012 Mountain West Preseason Co-Player of the Year in August, and currently ranks first on the team in kills and points and leads the league in service aces. She also was a 2011 All-Mountain West selection. In the community, Cranston has worked countless volleyball camps, speaks and reads to elementary schools, is a student leader for Athletes in Action and has created a Facebook group with younger girls in her hometown to mentor them about volleyball and life.
When asked about her character, her coach said: “Dana, from a character perspective, is an incredible person. She has been a great leader since the day that she walked into this gym as a freshman. She has always done what she’s asked to do. She is the type of player that makes you, as a coach, keep enjoying the job, because she does everything right. She’s a great example for the younger kids. She makes everyone around her better, because she sets the standard so high—and that’s not just about volleyball; that’s academically, as a person and just who she is.”
