COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.--For the second time this month--and the third time in her career--CSU senior Katelyn Steffan has been named the Mountain West Volleyball Player of the Week. The conference made the announcement Monday after the captain led the Rams to a pair of big sweeps at Moby Arena last week.
"It's a great accomplishment and honor," Steffan said. "I feel like all of our hitters are performing well and putting up good numbers each night."
Steffan, a 6-4 opposite hitter from Dickinson, N.D., recorded 25 kills on .396 hitting in two matches, an average of 4.17 kills her set. Additionally, she recorded four service aces, including a season-most three vs. New Mexico. The mark is tied for the most by a MW player this season in a three-set match.
Against the Lobos on Thursday, Steffan led the Rams with 10 kills on .350 hitting, in addition to four digs, two blocks and the trio of service aces. She stepped up in each set when her team needed her most, highlighted in the second game. Trailing 6-3 early, Steffan went back to serve and rattled off five consecutive points, including an ace, to give the Rams their first lead of the set. Moments later, trailing again, 13-12, Steffan tied the set with a big kill to begin a 5-0 run, capped by another kill, to make the score 17-13. The Rams never trailed again, but New Mexico did force a 21-21 tie, in which Steffan recorded kills in two of CSU's final four points to claim the set.
Two days later against TCU, Steffan was at her best again, recording a match-high 15 kills on .429 hitting. The kill total is tied for the most by a MW player in a three-set match this season. With the score tied at 3-3 in the final set, Steffan recorded three kills during a short stretch to put CSU up 8-3, and finished the match with the final point to keep the Rams on top of the MW standings at the halfway point.
For the week, Steffan averaged 4.17 kills, 0.67 aces and 1.33 digs per set, while hitting .396. She averaged 5.00 points per set over six total sets. On the season, Steffan has led the team in kills 14 times, and ranks first in the MW in both kills and points per set.
