Cans Around the Oval distribution bins will be available at Thursday's volleyball match. Other events will also take place at this weekend's matches.
Sept. 26, 2012
The Colorado State volleyball program begins its home Mountain West slate this week with two critical matches at Moby Arena. Several other events will be taking place during or around the two matches.
CANS AROUND THE OVAL
CSU’s department of athletics will again be playing a role in the University’s long-standing tradition, Cans Around the Oval. Fans, too, are encouraged to participate by bringing non-perishable canned food items to Thursday’s match. Distribution bins will be located on the concourse as fans enter Moby Arena.
Cans Around the Oval is an annual tradition in which students, faculty and staff partner with community members, local media and area businesses to raise awareness about the facts surrounding the issue of hunger, as well as raise food and monetary donations. This event is Larimer County's largest single-day food drive. Last year, the event collected 60,300 pounds of food and $34,000 in donations. This year’s goal is to collect 65,000 pounds of food and $40,000 for the Food Bank of Larimer County.
The event, which began in 1987, will take place on Oct. 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., but donations are already being collected. On collection day, the canned food is weighed and arranged to line the Oval, providing a visual representation of the invaluable generosity of the communities involved. RESIDENCE HALL CHALLENGE
Also on Thursday will be CSU volleyball’s annual residence hall challenge. The individual floor that has the highest percentage of its hall in attendance at Thursday’s match will win a pizza party with the volleyball team. Show the rest of CSU that your hall has the most CSU pride. Additionally, five students who have the most-spirited outfits will win CSU volleyball gear.
RAMS IN TRAINING
The second Rams in Training youth clinic will take place on the court immediately following Saturday’s match. Rams in Training is open to all children ages 6 through 12. The hour-long clinic is completely free, and youth volleyball players will be taught skills from CSU’s players and coaching staff. Space is limited, so sign up online. The third camp will take place after CSU’s match vs. Fresno State on Nov. 10.
As with every home match this season, volleyball trading cards will be distributed to fans at both Thursday and Saturday’s matches, while supplies last. Fans are encouraged to collect the entire set of 12 cards throughout the season.
For tickets to this week’s matches, click here. With eight Mountain West matches still remaining, fans can also take advantage of the Pick Six plan for only $30. Tickets can also be purchased over the phone at 1-800-491-RAMS, in person at the McGraw Athletic Center or at local King Soopers and City Market locations.
Nevada, new to the conference this year, will come to Moby Arena for just the second time ever Thursday night. Two days later, CSU hosts longtime conference foe, San Diego State at 1 p.m. The Rams have defeated the Aztecs in 21 consecutive matches and 15 in a row at Moby Arena, but San Diego State was picked to finish second in the Mountain West—behind only CSU—and earlier this year was receiving votes in the AVCA top-25 poll.
