COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – After helping the Rams to a 4-0 week, including the Pepperdine Invitational championship, Colorado State setter Deedra Foss has been named the Mountain West Women's Volleyball Player of the Week. The award is Foss’ first of her career. The league made the announcement Monday morning.
Foss, a junior from McKenna, Wash., averaged 12.07 assists, 2.60 digs, 0.67 kills, 0.47 aces and 0.47 blocks per set on the week, earning tournament MVP honors. She leads the league in assists per set on the season and now ranks third in service aces per set.
The four wins helped CSU improve to 6-0 on the season, the Rams’ best start since 2001 when the team set a program record with 20 consecutive wins to begin the season.
In the two most-recent matches — vs. UC Santa Barbara and at Pepperdine — Foss tallied 53 assists, which ranks fifth in the MW this season, and first among four-set matches. Against the Gauchos, Foss also totaled 13 digs, four kills on .444 hitting, two aces and four blocks. Foss had three double-doubles on the week.
As a team, CSU hit .289, including two matches above .315. Foss distributed the ball well, as four players had 10-plus kills in both of the matches that CSU hit above .315.
In a victory over Pepperdine to win the tournament, CSU went on a 13-3 run to break a 4-4 tie in Set 2. During the run, Foss had five assists and two blocks. Again in Set 2, CSU trailed late, 19-21, before a 6-1 run to close the set. Foss was again instrumental, posting three assists and a block.
Foss was named to the 2013 All-MW Preseason Team before the season started, and in 2012 was an All-MW selection and in 2011 was named the league’s Newcomer of the Year.
The Rams will look to improve to 7-0 on the season with a road contest at Denver, set for Tuesday at 7 p.m. MT. CSU is 15-2 all-time vs. the Pioneers, but lost in the most recent meeting at Hamilton Gymnasium.
