FORT COLLINS, Colo. — Two Colorado State volleyball players are set to embark on a two-week excursion to China. Samantha Peters and Kelsey Snider will represent CSU through the Bring It Promotions/USA Global Challenge, where they will play at least six matches against top Chinese professional teams.

“It’s a great opportunity for Sam and Kelsey,” CSU Head Coach Tom Hilbert said. “It’s supposedly an incredible environment with great fan support, and the Chinese Volleyball Federation fully supports it. It’ll be a great chance for them to play a very high level of volleyball, and anytime you get thrown into a new environment with good players and little time to acclimate, it makes you better.”

The pair, both of which are Colorado natives, will leave Friday for two days of training in Los Angeles. They will then take a redeye flight from Los Angeles to Shanghai, and will spend five days there before five days in Beijing, China’s capital.

“The tempo is a lot faster from what I've seen," said Peters, who will be a senior this fall. "There are a couple different rules as well, but it's basically the same game. It will be challenging but fun."

Peters and Snider make up two spots on the 12-member developmental team, which includes nine current collegiate student-athletes, two former student-athletes and a current professional player.

There will be some Mountain West connections on the roster, as two of the players—Skye Gullatt and Lexi Ross—play for New Mexico. Additionally, the team will be coached by Lobos’ head coach Jeff Nelson, and assisted by Shawn Garus, head coach of Boise State.

Hilbert served as head coach of the BIP/USA developmental team at the 2009 European Global Challenge in Croatia and Switzerland, and Tess Rogers competed in Argentina with BIP in 2005, a team also coached by Hilbert. This marks the 14th year that USA Volleyball has recognized an international trip through BIP.

“This will give me an opportunity to get some extra reps in, which I'm excited about," Peters said. "I'm really looking forward to the experience."

The team will play at least six matches against Chinese professional club teams over two tournaments. The players will arrive back in the U.S. on June 27. Also traveling on the trip is a 12-member Pac-12 All-Star team, but the two American squads will not play each other.

In addition to the volleyball, CSU’s participants are also looking forward to plenty of sightseeing and getting to experience Chinese culture.

“It’ll be great to see a lot of historical sites,” said Snider, a junior. “I think we’re going to the Great Wall of China, which will be awesome to see.”

The announcement adds to a lengthy list of current or former Rams playing overseas or with national team programs. Deedra Foss, who will be a junior this fall, will compete with the USA Volleyball A2 Program later this summer in Dallas, Texas, the same program that Brieon Paige won a gold medal with last year. Former Rams Dana Cranston and Megan Plourde are continuing their careers professionally. Plourde, who graduated last December, spent the spring playing in Croatia, and will join a professional team in Switzerland this fall. Cranston is currently in Winnipeg, Manitoba, competing with the Canadian national team, followed by a professional contract with a club team in France. A year ago, the entire team took a foreign tour to Italy and France.
