Samantha Peters was named Sportswomen of Colorado's collegiate volleyball player of the year.
March 10, 2014
DENVER, Colo. - Colorado's top athletes, coaches and mentors - including two former Colorado State standouts - were honored Sunday at Sportswomen of Colorado's 40th annual banquet.
Breann Fuller (swimming) and Samantha Peters (volleyball) represented the Rams, being chosen as the state's top collegiate athletes for their respective sports in 2013. The selections were chosen by a panel of Colorado media personalities from nominations submitted by the public.
Fuller and Peters join a lengthy list of CSU athletes honored by Sportswomen of Colorado. In total, 44 awards have been presented to CSU athletes or coaches, including 12 from the swimming & diving program. Volleyball has been represented eleven times, including six times in the past seven years.
In total, 52 women were awarded Sunday, culminating with the selection of the Sportswoman of the Year, which went to Olympic gold medalist and Colorado native Mikaela Shiffrin. 9News sports reporter and CSU alumna Susie Wargin was the banquet's emcee.
Fuller capped her career at CSU last spring by setting a Mountain West record in the 200 Backstroke. She currently holds four CSU records, and twice qualified for the NCAA Championships, finishing in the top 25 in two events last spring. The Brighton, Colo., native also excelled in the classroom, earning CSCAA first-team Scholar All-America recognition, CSU's Mencimer Memorial Award and the Mountain West's Senior Recognition Award.
Peters won four conference championships during her four-year career at CSU and advanced to the NCAA tournament each season. In 2013, she helped the Rams to a program-record 28-2 season and was named the Mountain West Volleyball Player of the Year. Raised in Englewood, Colo., Peters spent her freshman season at Santa Clara before transferring to CSU, where she worked her way into the starting lineup and eventually became an AVCA Honorable Mention All-American. In 2013, the middle blocker ranked 15th in the NCAA in blocking and 23rd in hitting percentage, one of two players in the country to rank in the top 25 of both categories.
