COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - - The Colorado State women's tennis team finished its first day of competition at the Air Force Invitational Friday. The Rams faced tough competition under on and off rainy weather.
"We had a tough day but everyone played very hard," said Head Coach Jon Messick. "We lost our focus in spots and didn't take advantage of many opportunities."
Tori Arneson and partner Kirsten Stople earned a victory against Rebecca Berger and Ronnie Spencer of Wyoming, 8-3, but were defeated in the quarterfinals by Franziska Jendrian and Melisa Esposito of Colorado, 8-1.
"Tori was the highlight of the day," said Messick. "Her three-set loss against a senior from CU showed a very high level of tennis for her in only her first semester of college tennis."
In doubles, the Rams earned two first-round victories in Flight 1. Lauren Strasburger and Caitlin Fluegge defeated Christen Monreal and Katrina Eromin of Air Force, 8-3. The pair later fell to Sarah Summerfield and Carly Van Hollen of Wyoming in the quarterfinals, 8-4.
In Flight 2 of the doubles competition, Greer Satherlie and Lauren Mulhern earned a first-round bye but fell to Brittany DeFelice and Virginia Iwinski of Wyoming, 8-2. Rui Xu and Katie Brown were defeated by Jennifer Whateley and Jill Kappel of Northern Colorado, 8-3.
In the singles, the Rams earned a first-round victory in Flight 5. Manar Al-Jazzaf defeated Shelley Johnson of Air Force, 6-1, 6-3. Al-Jazaaf will face Madie Kern of Colorado in the semi-finals.
In Flight 1 of the singles bracket, Strasburger earned a first-round bye but later fell to Melisa Esposito of Colorado, 6-1, 6-2. Fluegge fell to Tabitha Knop of Northern Colorado, 6-0, 6-4, and later was defeated by Thalia Barriga of Tulsa, 6-2, 6-1, in the backdraw.
In Flight 2 of singles, Arneson defeated Luiza Xavier of Northern Colorado, 6-1, 6-1, but then fell to Franziska Jendrian of Colorado, 6-0, 5-7, 6-4. Satherlie was defeated by Camila Belassi of Colorado, 6-4, 6-1, and will compete Saturday in the backdraw.
In Flight 3, Mulhern earned a first-round bye and was defeated by Meghan Kiser of Air Force, 6-4, 6-4. Stople fell to Shannon Young of Air Force, 6-4, 6-1.
In Flight 4, Xu also earned a first-round victory but was later defeated by Ewa Szatkowska of Tulsa, 6-1, 6-2. Brown fell to Yulia Gavenko of Tulsa, 6-0, 6-0, in the first round.
The Rams will return ready to the court Saturday at 8 a.m. hoping for a good performance.
