FORT COLLINS, Colo.--The Colorado State women's tennis team will compete in the 2012 Mountain West Championship Thursday-Sunday, as the No. 8 seed. Head Coach Jon Messick feels the Rams are getting prepared.
"We go down our opponent's lineup and talk about what happened the last time we played them and what we're going to do differently," said Messick. "It varies by position, but we'll work on a game plan."
CSU (4-15, 0-7 Mountain West) will face No. 2 seed, No.49 UNLV (15-8, 5-2 MW) Thursday, in the opening-round match, at 3 p.m. MT at the Aztec Tennis Center.
“It’s going to be a tough match, we’re playing the No. 2 seed that we lost to before,” said coach Messick. “I think the players are excited to play UNLV and see if we can get a win."
Thursday's match will determine who will make Saturday's bracket, with the winner set to face either the No. 3 seed, SDSU or No. 7 UNM. SDSU is 10-12 overall, with 5-2 in MW. The Aztecs have done consistently well this season, but struggled in their last match against Cal State Northridge, with a 4-3 loss.
UNM is 8-11 overall and 1-6 in MW. The Lobos have had a tough season; they have lost their last two matches in the Mountain West.
The championship match will be Sunday and will put the winners of the two semifinal matches together. This match will take place at 3 p.m. MT at the Aztec Tennis Center.
The Rams ended their regular season Friday with a loss against Air Force, 6-1. The single victory came from freshman Natalie Heffron, the only player to defeat the Falcons in singles matches.
"I think Natalie Heffron has definitely been the top player all season" said Messick. "We're just hoping that the whole team will play at the level that she's playing at. If we can get everybody at the same day, playing at that level, I think we've got a shot."
