Stevens battled back to win the second set after being down to force the tie-breaker, against the 37th-ranked player in the country. Heitzner, Stevens and Natalie Heffron picked up singles victories in the match against UNC. Adriana Wojakowska defeated Claire Uhle 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 at the No. 4 position to clinch the match for the Rams.
Stevens played at the No. 1 singles position for the seventh match in a row, where she earned her second victory at the No. 1 position. Stevens faced Aleksandra Josifoska the #37th ranked player in the nation on Friday, April 19, and forced her to a third-set tie-breaker before play was suspended. Heitzner saw time at the No. 3 and No. 4 singles positions, capturing victories at both positions. Heitzner claimed the lone point for the Rams in a 4-1 loss to conference rival UNLV.
Quotes from Jon Messick
“We’re excited about the conference tournament, that is always a special tournament for us,” said head coach Jon Messick. “We also have the opportunity to play New Mexico in the first round, who we had a real tough loss to earlier this season. Our lineups might look a little bit different this time around with a player or two, but I expect a real close, tough match. If we can win the match against New Mexico it gives us an opportunity to play the No. 1 seed in San Diego State, and that could be a unique opportunity for us. We will get a chance to play outdoors and could play two opponents we have seen already, so I expect this to be a good test for us.”
