Women's tennis preview: Rams travel to Fresno for MW Championship

THIS WEEK

The Colorado State women’s tennis team will open play at the Mountain West Championship on Wednesday, April 23 against San Jose State. The Spartans are the sixth seed and the Rams are No. 11.

In the 2012 MW Championship, the Rams defeated New Mexico 4-2 behind victories by Natalie Heffron and Mollie Cooper. The next day CSU was upended by No. 39 ranked San Diego State, 4-0.

ABOUT SAN JOSE STATE
San Jose State, which won the 2012-13 WAC Championship, will play in the Mountain West Championship for the first time. The Spartans finished the regular season with an overall record of 11-13, and 1-3 in MW matches. SJSU is riding a two-match winning streak, defeating Nevada (4-3) and UC Davis (4-3).

Competing at the No. 1 spot for the Spartans is Marie Klocker, who is 13-16 this spring. Sabastian Leon Chao, SJSU’s No. 3 singles player, has compiled a team-best 20 wins.

COLLEGIATE SCORING
The format is three, eight-game pro-set doubles matches followed by six best-of-three set-singles matches. The team that wins two or more of the three doubles matches receives one point. Each singles match is worth one point. Four or more points are required to win the team match.
