BOULDER, Colo. - The Colorado State women’s tennis team fell, 7-0, on Saturday afternoon to in-state rival Colorado at the Rocky Mountain Tennis Center in Boulder.
"I thought the team played well," Head Coach Jon Messick said. " I think we matched their level of play but weren't able to sustain it."
The Rams’ first match of the spring season began with doubles action, as the Rams lost the doubles point losing two matches. CSU’s No. 1 doubles squad of Natalie Heffron and Adriana Wojakowska led 5-3 before recording a ‘did not finish' because the other two matches were decided.
"I was real please with our No. 1 doubles performance," Messick said. "They were playing as good as I've seen them play."
In singles play, Rams senior Lauren Pick lost the first set to the Buffaloes Dhany Quevedo, 6-3, before mounting a comeback in the second set 5-7 forcing a third and final set. Ultimately Pick was defeated by Quevedo 1-0 (2) in the last stanza.
"Lauren Pick played a great match, maybe the best of her career," Messick said. "She sustained a high-level of play all the way through."
Heffron competed in the Rams’ No. 1 singles position for the fifth-consecutive match competing against Julyette Steur before dropping a tough first set 7-5 and losing the second set 6-1.
CSU will open its home slate next Sunday, Feb. 9, against Colorado Mesa at the Miramont Sports Complex. The Rams and Mavericks first serve is at 9 a.m.
"We got some confidence this afternoon, especially in the middle parts of the line and that will be important heading into next weekend," Messick said.
