FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State women’s tennis team finished three days of the Air Force Invitational in Colorado Springs this weekend, battling through some chilly and wet weather.
In the No. 1 flight in singles, sophomore Natalie Heffron lost 6-1, 6-3 in the second round. She would have played for fifth place, but the match was postponed due to weather.
“The team struggled a bit today with our match ups,” Messick said. “We had some tough first round matches. I was pleased with the play of our players still in the main draw.”
Junior Kaley Schultz also lost in the second round, 6-3, 7-6, and had her opportunity to play for seventh place also wiped out by the weather.
Freshman Mollie Cooper took fifth in the No. 6 flight, winning 6-1, 6-2 on her final match of the day, while freshman Maddie Buxton took fifth in the No. 7 flight, winning 7-6, 7-6 in her final match.
Freshman Abby Stevens battled in her first round in the No. 3 flight, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, but lost to Oregon’s Rabea Stueckmann. After that match Stevens only dropped two games in one match before her lone win over UNC’s Stephanie Catlin, winning 6-0, 6-1.
Sophomore Adriana Wojakowska won in the first round, 4-6, 7-5, 10-5 over South Dakota State’s Beatriz Souza then lost to Arizona’s Hailey Johnson in the second round, 6-3, 6-4. Wojakowska ended up winning 6-0, 6-0 to finish seventh in the No. 5 flight.
