Tennis recap: Colorado State concludes Air Force Invite

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State women’s tennis team finished three days of the Air Force Invitational in Colorado Springs this weekend, battling through some chilly and wet weather.

In the No. 1 flight in singles, sophomore Natalie Heffron lost 6-1, 6-3 in the second round. She would have played for fifth place, but the match was postponed due to weather.

“The team struggled a bit today with our match ups,” Messick said. “We had some tough first round matches. I was pleased with the play of our players still in the main draw.”

Junior Kaley Schultz also lost in the second round, 6-3, 7-6, and had her opportunity to play for seventh place also wiped out by the weather.

Freshman Mollie Cooper took fifth in the No. 6 flight, winning 6-1, 6-2 on her final match of the day, while freshman Maddie Buxton took fifth in the No. 7 flight, winning 7-6, 7-6 in her final match.

Freshman Abby Stevens battled in her first round in the No. 3 flight, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, but lost to Oregon’s Rabea Stueckmann. After that match Stevens only dropped two games in one match before her lone win over UNC’s Stephanie Catlin, winning 6-0, 6-1.

Sophomore Adriana Wojakowska won in the first round, 4-6, 7-5, 10-5 over South Dakota State’s Beatriz Souza then lost to Arizona’s Hailey Johnson in the second round, 6-3, 6-4. Wojakowska ended up winning 6-0, 6-0 to finish seventh in the No. 5 flight.

Schultz and freshman Kendall Heitzner lost their first round match in the No. 1 flight in doubles, and then won three in a row. They won their final match 8-0 over South Dakota State.

“Our doubles improved as the day progressed,” said Messick.

Wojakowska and Cooper lost in the second round to Eastern Michigan, 8-3.

In the No. 3 flight in doubles, Heffron and Stevens lost their first round match, then won three matches winning ninth place. They won their final match, 8-4.
