Lauren Mulhern gave the Rams two finals victories Sunday in backdraw competition

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Colorado State tennis team concluded play in Colorado Springs at the Air Force Invitational Sunday afternoon. The Rams earned three backdraw finals victories in singles and doubles.
Junior Melissa Holzinger faced Franzi Steinhardt of Illinois State in the winner’s bracket of the singles Flight 4 backdraw. Holzinger defeated Steinhardt, 6-2, 7-6 (2), to give the Rams their first finals victory of the day.
Sophomore Lauren Mulhern earned CSU its second finals win with a victory over Oregon’s Mahdi Besovic, 2-0, ret., in the Flight 7 backdraw competition.
Mulhern then teamed up with sophomore Veronika Wojakowska to face the Air Force team of Erin Conley and Shannon Young in the Doubles Flight 3 backdraw. Mulhern and Wojakowska defeated Conley and Young, 8-3, for the Rams’ third finals victory of the day.
“I think we showed improvement over last weekend,” Head Coach Jon Messick said. “We accomplished things we wanted to get better at. It was the toughest tournament we competed in all fall. Given the level of competition, I thought we did a lot better. The weekend also showed us what we need to get better at.”
The Rams will now have next weekend off before traveling to Las Vegas, Nev., to compete in the ITA Mountain Region Championships Oct. 14.
