COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Colorado State tennis team concluded its first day of competition at the Air Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colo., Friday afternoon with five total victories in the first round of singles and doubles.
“We saw some improvement in some areas today, but not as much as we wanted to see,” Head Coach Jon Messick said. “Four out of our six players won in the first round and are still in the winner’s bracket, which is good.”
Senior Laura Neal began competition for the Rams in the Flight 1 singles with a first-round victory over Oregon’s Sabine Fuchs, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Neal then battled Sophia Bergner of Denver for an appearance in Saturday’s semifinals, but fell in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
“Laura took on a tough Oregon player in the first round and a tough Denver player in the second,” Messick added. “I think Laura is playing at a high level right now.”
Competing in the singles Flight 2, sophomore Tori Arneson defeated Tiffany Knop of Northern Colorado in three sets, 6-2, 6-7 (3), 6-4, in the first round. Arneson lost in the second round to Melissa Cecil of Air Force, 7-5, 6-0, to send her to Saturday’s Flight 2 backdraws.
Junior Melissa Holzinger was the final Ram to earn a singles victory Friday when she defeated her opponent Luiza Xavier of Northern Colorado, 6-0, 6-3, in the Flight 4 of singles. Holzinger also lost in the second round, 6-3, 6-1, to Air Force’s Sarah Cassman.
The Rams had a good day in doubles competition going 2-1 in the first rounds of Flights 2 and 3.
Arneson and Holzinger teamed up for the first time this season to defeat the Air Force team of Cecil and Christen Monreal, 8-6, in the doubles Flight 2. Arneson and Holzinger will face Pavlina Smatova and Emmanuelle Cor of Oregon Saturday.
The team of Lauren Mulhern and Veronika Wojakowska are still alive in the Flight 3 of doubles competition after a win over Xavier and Hannah LaForest of Northern Colorado, 8-3. In Saturday’s quarterfinals, Mulhern and Wojakowska will play Wyoming’s Rebecca Berger and Alexandra Kovacs.
Play will resume Saturday morning.
