COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Colorado State women’s tennis team defeated the New Mexico Lobos 4-2 in the first round of the Mountain West Championships, in Colorado Springs, Colo.
“I think that this was an incredible team effort from our girls today,” said head coach Jon Messick. “We really had to pick it up and win at some sports that we lost at the last time we played New Mexico. What I told the team afterwards was that I was just so proud of the way they handled today’s match, and how we did not give up and how we turned the match around in our favor.”
The Rams captured the critical doubles point by defeating the Lobos in two out of three matches. The Lobos claimed a win at No. 3 doubles when Kristin Eggleston and Nikolina Grbac defeated Mollie Cooper and Abby Stevens 8-6. Natalie Heffron and Adriana Wojakowska then defeated Sarah Khan and Michaela Oldani 8-5 at the No. 2 position to even the score. The No. 1 team of Kaley Schultz and Kendall Heitzner picked up their first dual victory of the season at the perfect time, defeating Michaela Bezdickova and Laura Richardson 9-8 at the No. 1 position.
In singles, Eggleston won the first point against Schultz at the No. 3 position after Shultz had to retire due to injury with a 5-2 lead in the first set. Khan then defeated Heitzner 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 4 position to give the Lobos an early lead. The Rams battled back to take the next three points to win the overall match.
Heffron beat Grbac in straight sets 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 2 position. Cooper defeated Richardson 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 at the No. 6 position. Finally, Stevens defeated Bezdickova 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 1 position to clinch the match for the Rams.
Colorado State moves on to the quarterfinals with today’s victory, and will take on San Diego State tomorrow, at 10 a.m.
