GREELEY, Colo. - The Colorado State women’s tennis team defeated the Northern Colorado Bears, Monday in its season finale.
“UNC always plays us tough, and they played especially well today,” said head coach Jon Messick. “I think that we really missed Kaley Schultz in singles and doubles, and that put pressure on the rest of the team to step up. We struggled a little bit in doubles without Kaley, but our top four players got wins in singles, which was good to see.”
The Bears took the doubles point by defeating the Rams in two out of three sets. Natalie Heffron and Adriana Wojakowska defeated Stephanie Catlin and Elizabeth Tapia 8-2, at the No. 1 position for the Rams lone doubles win.
In singles, Colorado State won four out of the possible six matches to clinch the overall match. Kendall Heitzner stayed hot picking up her second win in three days, defeating Stephanie Catlin 6-0, 6-3 at the No. 3 position. Abby Stevens picked up her second overall victory at the No. 1 position defeating the Bears’ Jennifer Buchanan 6-2, 6-0. Wojakowska clinched the match for the Rams when she came back to defeat Claire Uhle 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 at the No. 4 position.
The Rams now turn their focus to the Mountain West Championships in Colorado Springs. Colorado State begins tournament play Thursday, April 25 at 10 a.m. vs. New Mexico. The winner of that match will take on San Diego State Friday, April 26 at 10 a.m.
