FORT COLLINS, Colo. - On Tuesday afternoon the Colorado State women's tennis team was defeated by in-state foe Northern Colorado 5-2.
The Rams (3-12, 0-5), who played singles without their No. 1 player Natalie Heffron, battled tooth and nail down until the end. After earning the doubles point thanks to the dangerous combinations of Natalie Heffron and Adriana Wojakowska and seniors Kaley Schultz and Lauren Pick, the Rams had a chance to seal the match.
In singles, sophomores Mollie Cooper and Maddie Buxton gave UNC fits. Cooper dropped her first set 6-4 and was trailing in the second set 3-4, before winning two consecutive games. Cooper's opponent, Chrissie Hoolahan, won the next three games and led 6-5. Cooper sent the match into a tie breaker in the second set with a decisive win in the sets 12th game. In the end, Hoolahan was too much and won the tie breaker 7-3.
On the adjacent court, Buxton, who also dropped her first set, battled to win the second, and forced a third. Ultimately, Buxton was defeated 6-2.
Rams' junior Adriana Wojakowska picked up CSU's lone victory in singles.
Back in October, 2013, when these two teams matched up in the Colorado State Invitational, UNC's Adriana Nieto defeated Wojakowska 6-7 (3), 7-5, 1-0 (6). It was a revenge match on Tuesday for Wojakowska as she defeated Nieto 6-4, 6-1.
"Adriana (Wojakowska) has, No. 1 improved, and No. 2 because of the injuries we've had in the lineup she has had to play high, which has gotten her really good experience," Messick said. "I think she was prepared both with her game and her confidence."
The Rams will return to conference competition on Saturday as they take on rival Wyoming at 2 p.m. The Cowgirls enter Saturday's match with a 9-7 overall record, 3-1 in Mountain West play and are riding a two-match win streak.
