FORT COLLINS, COLO. - The Colorado State women’s tennis team lost a close 4-3 decision to conference rival New Mexico, Saturday in Colorado Springs.
“I think we played well enough to win today, but we just couldn’t hold the leads we had,” said head coach Jon Messick. “I do think that there are a lot of positives to take away from the match today even though we lost.”
The Rams captured the critical doubles point, by defeating the Lobos in two out of three sets. Natalie Heffron and Adriana Wojakowska defeated Sarah Khan and Michaela Oldani 9-7, at the No. 2 position. Abby Stevens and Mollie Cooper then defeated Kristin Eggleston and Katie Wookey 8-2, at the No. 3 position to clinch the point for the Rams.
In singles, Natalie Heffron defeated Nikolina Grbac in straight sets 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 2 position to give the Rams an early lead. Kaley Schultz then defeated Kristin Eggleston 6-2, 6-4 to put the Rams up 3-0. The Lobos stormed back to capture the next four points for the overall victory.
The Rams will wrap up their regular season next week when they take on Northern Colorado Tuesday, April 16, at 2:30 p.m. The Rams will also host conference foes San Diego State, Thursday, April 18, at 1 p.m., and UNLV, Friday, April 19, at 2 p.m.
