FORT COLLINS, Colo. – It its first home match since February 9th, the Colorado State women’s tennis team was defeated 5-2 by Utah State. The loss drops the Rams to 3-10 overall and 0-4 in Mountain West contests.
“We had a couple bright spots with winning matches at the four and five, and solid performances from a sophomore and freshman,” Head Coach Jon Messick said. “I thought their No. 1 player was head and shoulders above the rest of their team, she is one of the top players in the region.
In doubles, the Aggies captured all three matches and took the doubles point. At the No. 2 doubles position seniors Kaley Schultz and Lauren Pick gave Utah State a run for their money as they forced a tiebreaker before eventually losing 8-7.
In singles action, the Rams won two of the six matches. Freshman Celine Voss earned her first collegiate victory with a 6-1, 7-5 sweep of Aggies Lexi Turley.
“She has been getting better every match,” Messick said. “She is gradually getting her confidence, but I think the main thing is for her to keep improving her tennis and that is what she has been doing.”
Sophomore Maddie Buxton earned her fourth victory over the year at the No. 4 spot for the Rams as she swept Katie Sweet 6-3, 6-4.
Although the Rams had some success on Friday, the Aggies earned the overall match victory with sweeps in the No. 1, 2 and 6 singles position.
The Rams will have one day off before hosting Mountain West foe Boise State on Sunday. The match is currently scheduled to be played outside at the University Tennis Complex but bad weather could force the match indoors. CSURams.com will have all updates to the location of Sunday’s match.
