FORT WORTH, Texas - The Colorado State women's tennis team continued conference play Sunday, falling to No. 53 New Mexico, 6-1, in Fort Worth, Texas. Lauren Strasburger was the only Ram to pick up a win as the squad fell to 6-5 on the season.
The Rams (6-5, 0-2 MWC) continued their trip to Texas, after facing No. 22 TCU Friday.
In doubles, the Rams brought the same lineup as in their previous match.
Laura Neal and Hilary Tyler gave the Lobos the best match, winning a total of five games, but ultimately lost the match, 8-5.
Singles play proved tough for the Rams, but they did manage to capture one point, at the No. 3 spot.
That's where Strasburger picked up her 11th win of the season, earning a victory in a tiebreaker. She defeated senior Lucy Scott, 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (8).
Tyler faced her first ranked opponent of the year in No. 111 Ola Abou-Zekry. Competing at No. 1 singles, Tyler was able to win a total of six games, but fell 6-2, 6-4.
After suffering an ankle injury against TCU, Neal continued to be affected, dropping her match at the No. 2 position.
"We are a better team than what we showed," commented Head Coach Jon Messick. "We just had a few things break down and didn't get the points we needed. We had our chances, we just couldn't capitalize."
New Mexico moves to 11-6 on the year.
The Rams return to the court Wednesday when they step out of conference play to take on Denver in Denver, Colo. The match is set for 1:30 p.m. MDT.
