COSTA MESA, Calif. - The Colorado State women’s tennis team defeated the Vanguard Lions 6-3 Thursday for its second victory of the spring season. The two teams played in Division III format thus each match, including doubles, counts for one point.
In singles, The Rams picked up victories at the Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 4 positions. Junior Natalie Heffron looked strong at the No. 1 position as she defeated Vanguard’s Juliet Labarthe 6-3, 6-0. Sophomore Mollie Cooper, playing in the No. 2 spot for CSU for the first time this year, also looked strong as she bested the Tigers’ Sophie Angner 6-1, 6-1. Rams’ senior captain Lauren Pick and sophomore Maddie Buxton also picked up victories for the Rams in singles.
“I really think that we played well today,” said head coach Jon Messick. “I think we really executed the things we’ve been practicing all week long.”
The Rams have enjoyed some great practice weather this week in southern California as they prepare for to start their outdoor season when they return to Colorado.
“The weather has been great out here, I think we have really benefitted from the weather we have had this week,” Messick said. “It should really prepare us well for when we move outdoors.”
Colorado State took two out of three doubles matches from the Tigers, as the combination of Heffron and Pick defeated Angner and Gabriele Alford 8-2. The Rams’ other senior captain Kaley Schultz picked up her first doubles victory, after returning on Monday from injury, as she and Cooper defeated Michaele Sulli Van and Labarthe 8-2.
The Rams will look to wrap up their road trip with a victory Saturday March 22, when they take on Cal State Los Angles at 12 p.m.
