LINCOLN, Neb. - The Colorado State women’s tennis team lost a touch match to the Drake Bulldogs, Sunday in Lincoln Neb., by a final score of 7-0.
“I don’t think the score indicates how well we played today; I think we really played at a high level,” Head Coach Jon Messick said. “We got beat by a very good Drake team today, and I thought the team played at, undoubtedly, the highest level we’ve played at all season long.”
In doubles, the Rams had leads at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions before eventually dropping the doubles point. Natalie Heffron and Adriana Wojakowska defeated Lea Kozulic and Jordan Eggleson at the No. 1 position by a final score of 8-2. Mollie Cooper and Lauren Pick had an early lead over Nell Boyd and Mariel Ante before eventually dropping the point by a final of 8-6.
“We really put ourselves in a position to win the doubles point. I was proud of how we played in doubles,” Messick said.
In singles, the Rams had opportunities to win points at the Nos. 1, 2 and 5 positions as all three matches went to third set tiebreakers. Heffron gave Klavdija Rebol everything she could handle at No. 1 before eventually being defeated in the third set. Wojakowska also gave Ante a tough match at No. 2 before also being defeated in a third set. Maddie Buxton was the Rams’ last hope at a singles point, as she took Kozulic to three sets before being defeated by a score of 2-6, 6-1, 6-3.
The Rams will resume play when they take on Nebraska tomorrow, March 2 at 10 a.m.
