FORT COLLINS COLO. – The Colorado State women’s tennis team fell to Montana Sunday (5-2) in a home match played at Miramont Lifestyle Fitness.

“We played tough, we played hard, and I was mainly impressed with our freshmen,” said head coach Jon Messick. “Abby (Stevens) has just one speed and that’s all out, she beat an excellent opponent. That’s just the way she is playing right now and we need to get the whole team playing like that.”

The Rams played without junior Kaley Schultz at No. 2 for the second consecutive match due to injury, and also remain without the services of No. 6 singles player Jennifer Weissmann, a freshman.

"It changes the lineup," Messick said of the injuries. "It puts people in positions they’re not used to, especially doubles. We had to redo some doubles combinations to adjust to that. That being said we still need to get consistent performance from the people who are in the lineup, so it’s really no excuse. There’s not that big of a gap on our team between our top player and our No. 9 player. We just need to get everybody playing at the same level."

In doubles, the Rams dropped both the No. 1 and No. 3 matches, giving Montana the doubles point. In No. 2 doubles the tandem of Abby Stevens and Mollie Cooper defeated Montana’s Sasha Carter and Maddy Murray 8-6.

In singles Stevens dominated her opponent Sasha Carter 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 2 position to even the score for the CSU. The Rams then dropped the No. 1 and No. 4 matches to give Montana an advantage. Freshman Kendall Heitzner captured a back-and-forth victory over Montana’s Haley Driver 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 at the No. 3 position to give the Rams a lift. Montana’s Laurance Pelchat then beat Cooper 6-0, 6-0, to give Montana the overall match.

The Rams will look to get back on track this weekend when they travel to Las Cruces New Mexico to take on New Mexico State Friday, March 1 at 2 p.m., Northern Arizona Saturday, March 2 at 10 a.m. The Rams will then head to El Paso Texas to take on  UTEP on Sunday, March 2 at 9 a.m.
