LINCOLN, NEB. – The Colorado State women’s tennis team lost a tough 5-2 decision to the Illinois State Redbirds Saturday, in Lincoln, Neb. Despite the loss, freshman Abby Stevens notched her second singles victory in a row, and claimed her first career doubles victory, partnering with fellow freshman Mollie Cooper.
 
“It was good to see some of our freshmen get some wins out there,” said head coach Jon Messick. “Everyone played really hard, it’s just disappointing we didn’t get the win in such a close match.”

In doubles, the Rams dropped both the No. 1 and No. 2 matches, giving Illinois State the doubles point. In No. 3 doubles the tandem of Abby Stevens and Mollie Cooper defeated Heather Nisbit, and Carolina Abello 8-6. 

Rams sophomore Natalie Heffron notched her first singles victory of the 2013 spring season by defeating Illinois State junior Phyllis Tiggis 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 1 position.

Illinois State claimed victories in Nos. 2, 3, 5 and 6 in singles to clinch the overall victory. Redbirds sophomore Emmie Marx defeated Rams junior Kaley Schultz at the No. 2 spot, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2, while Illinois State’s Kadi Ilves topped CSU freshman Kendall Heitzner 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3.

The Redbirds’ winning ways continued at No. 5 singles, where senior Stefanie Youngberg defeated Rams freshman Adriana Wojakowska 6-4, 7-5. Illinois State junior Gabby Phillips captured the victory at No. 6, defeating Rams freshman Maddie Buxton 6-2, 7-6.

The Rams will look to get back on track as they take on No. 15 Nebraska on Sunday, Feb. 17, at 11 a.m. (MT).
