The Colorado State women's tennis team fell, 6-1, Sunday to in-state rival Colorado. Despite the loss, the Rams captured one point, as freshman Abby Stevens notched her first career dual-match win at the No. 4 singles position.
"Even though we wren't satisfied with the result of the match, we were satisfied with the effort," said head coach Jon Messick. "We played hard on every court, and I really thought the players fought for it on each and every point."
In doubles, the Rams dropped both the No. 1 and No. 2 matches, giving Colorado the doubles point. In No. 3 doubles the tandem of Natalie Heffron and Adriana Wojakowska trailed 6-5 before play was stopped to move to singles action.
Colorado claimed victories in each of the No. 1 through No. 3 matches to clinch the overall victory. Buffaloes sophomore Julyette Steur defeated Rams sophomore Natalie Heffron at the No. 1 spot, 6-3, 6-1, while Colorado's Winde Janssens topped CSU junior Kaley Schultz 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2.
The Buffaloes' winning ways continued at No. 3 singles, where freshman Dhany Quevedo defeated Rams freshman Kendall Heitzner, 6-2, 6-3.
Stevens then defeated Colorado senior Erin Sanders 2-6, 6-3, with a 10-3 tiebreaker to give the Rams a lift.
"(With) Abby, you could tell by watching her match that she fights for everything," said head coach Jon Messick. "For a freshman to play that well against a senior really bodes well for the future."
Sophomore Adriana Wojakowska was defeated by Colorado junior Carla Manzi 6-3, 6-1, while Rams freshman Jennifer Weissmann lost to Colorado junior Ashley Tiefel 6-4, 6-2.
