HOME OPENER - ORANGE OUT VS. WYOMING
Saturday, Oct. 27 | 12 p.m. MT | Moby Pool | Fort Collins, Colo.
The Rams open Moby Pool for their first home dual meet of the season with an Orange Out against conference-rival Wyoming, Saturday, Oct. 27 at noon MT with diving beginning early at 11:15 a.m. Orange T-shirts will be given to the first 100 students.
“It is an Orange Out event with T-shirts available,” Head Coach Christopher Woodard said. “It’s coming into Halloween weekend, and it’s our first home meet; that in and of itself is exciting. When you put on top of that that it’s against Wyoming—obviously one of our tougher rivals—that adds the element of a Border War and brings things up to a boiling point. I think it’s going to be a very good meet.”
Coming off loss at DU
CSU is looking to bounce back from a 117-181 loss to Denver last Saturday. While the Rams excelled on boards, sweeping in the 1- and 3-meter diving events, the Rams were not able to capture a win. Woodard set up the schedule to challenge the team from the beginning of the season and CSU will find another fierce opponent in Wyoming.
The age-old rivalry has become more intense each year. The Rams will look to snap a three-meet losing streak to the Cowgirls. The most recent loss was last season when the Rams fell on the road to Wyoming, 106-189.
“Hopefully last year’s loss stuck with them in the entire offseason, because it certainly stuck with me,” Woodard said. “We got taken to the woodshed up there, and it was a very difficult meet. That being said, three weeks later the girls rebounded extremely well and performed some phenomenal times at conference. So that was disappointing, but certainly in the overall scheme of things we were OK. But we know coming in this year, early in the season, that we want to be our best against Wyoming; it’s how we want to measure ourselves right now.”
The Cowgirls were ranked fourth in the preseason coaches poll, only one position above the Rams, which makes them the closest conference rival the Rams can overtake. But Wyoming will by no means make it easy on the Rams, returning seven all-conference performers. The Cowgirls placed fourth in the 2012 MW Championships, where they set five school-record times.
“Wyoming did lose some pretty heavy hitters in their senior class, but they’ve got some good kids coming in as well,” Woodard said. “So I never look at it as if they’re rebuilding, they’re just reloading. It is nice to have Breann [Fuller] back in the water, and Kelly [Mathews] is swimming phenomenally. We’re just going to hope that another week is going to bring more positive performances on the boards and in the pool from some of our underclassmen.”
Milone named MW Diver of the Week
On boards the Rams should prove to be tough competition for the Cowgirls. With a squad of six divers who all excel in different ares, the team swept in the 1- and 3-meter events against DU. The victory was led by freshman Ariana Milone who earned first place in both events, scoring a combined 594.46 (316.73 on the 3-meter board, 277.73 on the 1-meter). Her score on the 3-meter boards was more than 30 points higher than any CSU diver during the 2011-12 season, and was within eight points of the school’s all-time record. She was rewarded on Wednesday by being named the MW Diver of the Week.
In the pool, Fuller should continue her speed in the 100 and 200 Backstroke and the sprint freestyle. Against DU, Fuller took first in the 200 Backstroke and 50 Freestyle, proving her consistency and diversity against Denver. Mathews adds strength to the breaststroke events, coming off a win against Denver in the 100 Breaststroke.
