COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Senior Shayna Solomon finished her solid season at the NCAA zone E diving qualifiers, Thursday at the Air Force Cadet Natatorium.
From start to finish of the 2011-12 season Solomon lead the diving team with her consistent performance on the 1- and 3-meter springboards. In October, Solomon made the qualifying score for the diving zones and she continued to rack up points for the Rams throughout the dual-meet season. At the Mountain West championships Solomon finished 7th and received all-conference honors for her performance on the 1-meter springboards.
"She's really stepped up when we've needed her," head diving coach Kevin Witt said, "and she's definitely delivered in points the way she has every season."
As a senior, Solomon stepped up on the team. Solomon not only built up the team with her technically-honed dives, but with her unceasingly-humble attitude and constant encouragement to her teammates.
"Dealing with a back injury, she did a lot of work to be able to physically participate and be able to do what we needed her to do," Witt said. "She was a leader. She set a good example for the other divers and helped them with their dives. She had a really good career."
At zones, Solomon had six dives for her preliminary set in the 1-meter springboard. After four strong dives, in the fifth dive, Solomon's leg gave out which caused her to score a zero for the dive. Solomon could have given up since her hopes of making the finals were gone, but instead, Solomon came back to finish her collegiate career with one of her strongest dives of the night.
"She didn't stay down on herself for very long," Witt said. "You don't have a lot of time to dwell on things between dives. It definitely upset her, but she was able to recover and come back and do a really nice dive."
Solomon finished her collegiate career with the top scores of the season for the team in the 1- and 3-meter diving events.
