Senior P Kacie McCarthy
May 14, 2013
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Three Colorado State softball players were recognized on Tuesday when the Mountain West released its 2013 all-conference team.
Junior third baseman Chelsea Biglow, senior pitcher Kacie McCarthy, and junior shortstop Ashlie Ortega were selected to the 20-player squad, each garnering all-league honors for the second consecutive seasons.
The trio helped the Rams to a tie for second place in the conference standings, as Biglow and Ortega anchored the Rams’ offense and the left side of the infield, while McCarthy, the 2012 MW Pitcher of the Year, had another stellar year in the circle for CSU.
Biglow was a force at the plate for the Rams throughout the conference season, ranking tied for second with two triples, and tied for third with five doubles on the year. Biglow was fifth in MW play in total bases (40) and had a .690 slugging percentage, which also ranked fifth in the conference. She drove in 15 runs in league play, tying for sixth, and her 22 hits were tied for the seventh-most. Biglow earned two Mountain West Player of the Week awards during the season.
McCarthy started made 15 appearances in 18 conference games for the Rams, tying for the league-high in the category, while leading the conference with 79.2 innings pitched. She notched seven wins in league play, tying for second. She pitched seven complete games, including three shutouts, and ranked third in the MW with 57 total strikeouts. She was fifth in opponent’s batting average (.251) and ERA (2.37).
Ortega reasserted herself as one of the league’s top shortstops and hitters, ranking among the conference leaders in a number of offensive and defensive categories. The Brighton, Colo., native ranked second in the MW with 18 runs scored, while her .404 batting average in conference play ranked eighth. She ranked second in the league with 14 walks and posted a .521 (fourth) on-base percentage against the MW. Ortega also ranked tied for third in doubles (5) and tied for second in triples (2), while posting the eight-best slugging percentage (.614) in the MW with 35 total bases. Defensively, she ranked tied for third in both assists (43) and double-plays fielded (7).
