Albuquerque, N.M. - The Colorado State softball team took two games in exciting fashion against conference opponent New Mexico to move to 3-3 in the MWC on Saturday. The Rams defeated the Lobos by scores of 1-0 and 6-3, respectively.
Sophmore Melanie Mahoney and junior Megan Masser combined to shut out New Mexico in the first game. Mahoney allowed only four hits and two walks while striking out two lobos in 4 1/3 innings of work. Masser picked up the win in relief, giving up only two hits and fanning one to close out the game. With the win, Masserís record now stands at 11-4 on the season.
Sophomore Steph Roberts scored the Ramsí only run in the top of the sixth inning. After reaching on a fielderís choice, Roberts was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Kerry Farrell. Senior Jen Mahoney hit an RBI single to centerfield to score Roberts from second.
In the nightcap, the Rams found themselves down 1-0 after the first inning. A Colorado State rally in the top of the fourth inning would put the Rams on top for the rest of the game.
Leading the way for the Colorado State was Junior Ricki Walker. After a Jen Mahoney single to left field Walker, who was 3-for-4 from the plate, hit a two-run shot to put the Rams on top 2-1. Colorado State went on to score five runs in the fourth inning with the help of two Lobo errors.
Freshman Genevieve Kelly picked up the win moving her record to 5-3 on the season. Kelly pitched 6 1/3 innings and giving up three runs on eight hits and striking out three batters.
Masser picked up her fifth save, getting the final two outs to preserve the Ram victory.
Colorado State is now 22-9 (3-3 MWC) on the season. The Rams will open up at home on April 11 with a double-header against Utah beginning at 1:00 p.m. and on April 12 with a double-header against BYU beginning at noon.
