Softball preview: Colorado State travels to Bayer CropScience Classic

Bayer CropScience Classic…
The Rams head to Fresno Calif., this weekend for the Bayer CropScience Classic. First up for Colorado State is Cal State Northridge on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. MT. On Friday the Rams will face Mississippi State at 5:30 p.m. MT, followed by tournament-host Fresno State at 8 p.m. MT. Saturday and Sunday Colorado State will play single games, facing East Tennessee State on Saturday at 10 a.m. MT and Georgetown on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. MT.

Colorado State Classic...
The Rams finished the Colorado State Classic with a 5-0 record, claiming the tournament title. Colorado State defeated North Dakota State on Friday in a close 3-2 game followed by a 12-3 rout of Utah Valley. On Saturday, the Rams beat Utah State 5-3 and followed with a pair of victories on Sunday against South Dakota State, 6-0 and 6-3, respectively. North Dakota State finished in second place with a 3-2 record at the Colorado State Classic. The Bison won a head-to-head tiebreaker with Utah State, who also finished 3-2. South Dakota State finished with a 1-3 record and Utah Valley concluded the tournament with a 0-5 mark.

Colorado State Sluggers...
Senior Rebecca Penland led all batters during the Colorado State Classic with a .600 average at the plate. She recorded nine total hits, four doubles, a home run and eight RBI during the weekend. She also picked up a victory in the circle on Friday against Utah Valley, tossing a complete-game two-hitter. She struck out seven Wolverine batters while picking up her first win of the season. Junior Caitlan Stem and sophomore Jenna Krogh recorded .500 averages at the plate last weekend. Stem tallied seven total hits with a double, two roundtrippers and four RBI in her five starts while Krogh recorded eight total hits, a triple and two RBI.

Outscoring the Opponent...
Colorado State has scored 93 runs this season and has outscored its opponents by nine runs. Opponents have scored 84 runs against the Rams in 19 games. The Rams have recorded 22 of their 93 runs (24 percent) in the first inning of games while only allowing 10 runs in the first frame. 

Cal State Northridge...
The Matadors take a 7-11overall record to Fresno, Calif., this weekend. Jennifer Mosier leads the team at the plate with a .368 average, tallying a double, two homers and six RBI in her 14 starts. In the circle for Cal State Northridge, Amanda Pitzenberger has recorded a 2.92 ERA and leads the team. She is 5-2 on the season with two complete games and 13 strikeouts. The Rams are 1-12 all time against the Matadors.

Mississippi State...
The Bulldogs bring a 13-6 overall record to the tournament this weekend after winning four straight last weekend. Chelsea Bramlett leads the team at the plate with a .500 average in 19 starts. She has 30 hits with a double, a triple and five RBI. Stephanie Becker leads the team in the circle with a 1.64 ERA in 25.2 innings. She has a 3-1 record with two saves and 15 strikeouts.   The Bulldogs lead the all-time series against the Rams, 2-1.

Fresno State...
Bayer CropScience Classic-host Fresno State boasts a 10-7 overall record and a 6-0 home record this season. Caitlin Stiglich leads the team at the plate with a .432 average in 14 starts. She has tallied 16 total hits with a double and three RBI. Morgan Melloh has six of the team’s 10 victories this season in the circle with a 3.30 ERA in 57.1 innings. She is 6-4 with 12 appearances while striking out 86 opposing batters. The Bulldogs lead the overall series 25-4 and have won the last six dating back to 1998 and won the last meeting, 11-5, in 2007.

East Tennessee State...
The Buccaneers are 8-9 heading to Fresno, Calif., this weekend. Cheniece Cason has recorded a .327 batting average in her 17 starts and leads the team. She has 17 total hits with a double, four triples and four RBI. Jessica Duncan leads East Tennessee State in the circle with a 2.09 ERA in nine appearances. She has tossed 50.1 total innings and three complete games while fanning 29 opposing batters. This will be the first meeting between the Bucs and the Rams.

Georgetown...
The Hoyas take a 6-7 record to the Bayer CropScience Classic this weekend. Mackensey Carter leads the team at the plate with a .342 average in 13 starts. She has 13 total hits with a double and five RBI. Jennifer Connell leads the team in the circle with a 1.75 ERA in 36 innings pitched. She is 3-3 with six complete games and one shutout while striking out 20 opposing batters. This will be the first meeting between the Hoyas and the Rams.

Rams on TV...
Colorado State will play two nationally televised conference games this season and one game on BYU-TV. The conference announced Feb. 24 that the Rams will face San Diego State April 11 live on CBS College Sports at 2 p.m. MT and will host New Mexico on May 8 at 1 p.m. MT live on The Mtn. Colorado State’s matchup against BYU will also air live on BYU-TV on April 29 at 6 p.m. MT. This will be the first time Colorado State will host a televised event since the 2008 season when Colorado State and UNLV battled in a doubleheader live on The Mtn. The Rams won both of the games, 14-13 and 7-6, respectively.

Score Some More...
The Rams have tallied a .335 average with runners in scoring position this season and recorded a .370 average last weekend during the Colorado State Classic. Sophomore Jenna Krogh leads the team with a .533 (8-for-15) average with runners on second or third, followed by senior Rebecca Penland, who has garnered a .464 (13-for-28) average. Last weekend, Krogh hit .571 (4-for-7) and Penland hit .375 (3-for-8) with runners in scoring position.

Sophomore Success...
Sophomore Kelli Eubanks has started the 2010 season like she finished her freshman campaign in 2009. Eubanks has a 8-4 record thus far and has recorded eight of the team’s 12 total victories. She has a 3.33 ERA in 77.2 innings pitched while tallying 78 strikeouts. She has appeared in 17 of Colorado State’s 19 games this season, starting 10, and has garnered eight complete games. She started two of the Rams five games last weekend at home, garnering a 2-0 record with a 1.65 ERA in 17 total innings during the Colorado State Classic. She recorded 15 strikeouts and her second save of the season.
