The Colorado State softball team dropped two games on the second day of the Holiday Inn-Select Tulsa Festival. Drake edged out the Rams 3-2 in eight innings, and Akron beat Colorado State by a 6-3 final.
Colorado State and Drake held each other scoreless for the first four innings of the game before Drake took a one-run lead in the fifth. The Rams answered in the bottom of the sixth inning when junior Melanie Laffoon singled in junior Jennifer Gardner.
In extra innings, Drake added two runs in the eighth and held off a Colorado State rally to seal the win. Senior Kerry Farrell added the Ramsí second run when she doubled in sophomore Jessica Strickland to lead off the eighth.
Strickland fell to 5-2 on the season in the complete game loss, giving up three earned runs on ten hits.
In the late game against Akron, the Zips jumped out to a lead with four runs in the fourth inning on two two-run home runs. The Rams cut the lead in half when Strickland singled in junior Katie Dean and Farrel drove in Gardner with a sacrifice fly to centerfield.
Another two-run homerun in the sixth inning extended the Colorado State deficit to 6-2. Laffoon singled in Strickland with two outs, and freshman Julia Kloppe popped up to third to end the game at 6-3.
Junior JayCee Wood picked up the loss, and moved to 0-2 on the season, giving up four runs on five hits in 3.1 innings of work. Junior Genevieve Kelly gave up two runs on three hits in 2.2 innings of relief.
The Rams close out play in Tulsa on Sunday with a 9 a.m. CT game scheduled against Western Illinois.
