Rams Softball Closes Troy Cox Classic With Pair Of Wins

The Colorado State softball team concluded play at the Troy Cox Classic in Las Cruces, N.M. with a win over the New Mexico Lobos on Saturday night and a Sunday morning victory over the Loyola-Chicago Ramblers.

The Rams picked up the team?s 10th straight victory over the Lobos by a score of 6-5 with a late inning rally. New Mexico jumped out to an early 5-0 lead after the third inning, but the Rams would hold the Lobos scoreless in the final four frames to claim the win.

The Rams got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning as senior Brittany Burtner scored on a line out to center field by freshman Julia Kloppe. Colorado State then cut the lead to just one in the sixth inning when sophomore Jessica Strickland hit a bases loaded double to center field, scoring junior Jennifer Gardner, senior Stephanie Roberts and Burtner.

Down 5-4 in the seventh inning, the Rams completed the comeback when junior Melanie Laffoon hit a pinch hit two-run homer to give the Rams the 6-5 victory.

Strickland (3-2) picked up the win for the Rams in relief of JayCee Wood. Strickland pitched 4.2 innings and allowed one run in two hits while striking out two Lobo batters.

Colorado State then capped the weekend with an 11-1 victory over Loyola-Chicago. The Rams scored first in the second inning when freshman Molly Gallu singled to right to score freshman Lauren Cusick.

Colorado State broke the game wide open with six more runs in the third inning, all coming with two outs. Gardner doubled to center field to score Farrell and Strickland, then junior Genevieve Kelly and Gallu walked to load the bases for Roberts, who came through with a grand slam home run to give the Rams a 7-1 advantage and put the game out of reach.

The Rams added four more runs in the fourth inning when Strickland led off the inning with a double. Farrell advanced to third base, and a walk by Kloppe loaded the bases. The Ramblers walked junior Rachelle Padeway and Gardner, scoring Strickland and Farrell. One out later, Gallu singled to center field, scoring Padeway and Gardner and giving the Rams an 11-1 win.

Kelly pitched a complete game, allowing one run on four hits and striking out five batters in five innings.

The Rams improved to 7-5 on the season, and will be back in action Feb. 25-27 at the University of Tulsa Tournament.
